Some people seek the comfort that a reliable, daily work routine provides. They go through their checklists and complete the planned tasks by 5 p.m. They have lunch promptly at noon. They keep the world's essential paperwork flowing. I'm very, very happy these folks exist. I'm not one of them.

To me, new challenges keep life fresh. I've been fortunate to find opportunities at companies where I could make an impact. My first mentor, Jack Bierman, former editor-in-chief of L.A. Parent magazine and founder of the regional parenting publication genre, said to me recently, "You make things happen." I couldn’t have been more flattered.
